More money now

30/05/03

This is the only certain way to end the funding crisis in schools.

Redundancies

As schools reopen after the break, thousands of teachers and support staff will receive redundancy notices. Fewer Staff Over the next few weeks thousands more teachers and support staff who leave will not be replaced.

The Cause

The financial crisis results from the inability of the Government to get its sums right. The Government has provided insufficient money.

The Solution

More money now to avoid: redundancies; nonreplacement of staff; fewer supply teachers; larger classes; and increased teaching time.

Only the NUT

Only the NUT has demanded more money now. Additional new money is the only way to meet the vital needs of schools and protect the quality of education for all our pupils. Supporters The Conservative and Liberal Democrats education teams support the NUT`s approach, as does the Labour Chair of the Education Select Committee.

General Secretary, Doug McAvoy, said: "The funding problems facing schools are caused by Government. The solution is obvious. More money should be provided now. The Government underspent on education last year by £1 billion so the money is there. I call on Charles Clarke to release it."
