Current debate: Unitary Councils in Suffolk ?

(MIDDLE SCHOOL DEBATE - Please use the feedback form)

Ipswich Borough Council's original bid to Central Government to become a Unitary Authority was not successful.  But the Government is determined to move ahead to unitary councils, because they believe this saves money.  However, any reorganisation to unitary councils means that administration of all schools and education services would be operated by these unitaries rather than by Suffolk County Council.

The Government seems to be favouring unitary councils based on Ipswich and Lowestoft-Gt Yarmouth, leaving question marks over the rest of the county.  An Alternative is to go back to East and West Suffolk, with Lowestoft/Waveney again joining Gt Yarmouth.

The NUT is a major stakeholder as the largest teacher's union in the county. We represent over 3,000 teachers in Suffolk. We are being consulted centrally by both the local Councils and the Boundaries Committee.   We need to hear from you so that we can represent our members' views.
