Teachers say . National Curriculum Tests:

• narrow the curriculum;
• do not support effective teaching;
• impede professional judgement; and
• are not the best way to assess pupil progress.

Charles Clarke says ... National Curriculum Tests:

• provide objective evidence of children's progress;
• enable schools to tailor their teaching to each child's needs;
• raise individual performance; and
• ensure pupils get the support they need.
